The final stages are the hardest, both for the mare and the breeder. It’s a period of sleepless nights and careful preparation, as you want your dream foal to be born healthy. A mare’s labor progresses quickly—usually within 15-20 minutes after the water breaks. That’s why proper preparation is crucial to act swiftly if necessary.
I ensure that the camera system and foaling alarm are working properly, and I keep the veterinarian’s phone number readily available. Additionally, I’ve put together my own foaling kit, stored in a transparent box so I can immediately see what’s inside.
My foaling kit includes:
Long and short gloves
Lubricant
Thermometer
Umbilical clamp
Enema
Antiseptic solution
Sterile gauze
Clean towels
Oxygen tank with mask
Bottle with nipple
Sterile knife
